Bertrand Belin – L’inconnu en personne
Bertrand Belin returns with “L’inconnu en personne”, proving that some artists can disappear from music for a while and become more essential rather than forgotten. The French singer-songwriter has spent recent months exploring other mediums—appearing in the Larrieu brothers’ film “Le Roman de Jim”, participating in Marc Lainé’s theatrical exhibition “Entre vos mains”, and releasing his fifth book “La Figure”—but his voice remains unmistakably magnetic.
The new track builds on the synthetic, mid-tempo foundation established on 2022’s ‘Tambour Vision’, where analogue keyboards seemed to take control of his sound.
“L’inconnu en personne” opens with bass chords and synth melody that immediately establish the song’s contemplative mood. The title itself presents an oxymoron—”the unknown in person”—which perfectly captures Belin’s fascination with the mysteries of human connection. His lyrics explore the lives behind faces we encounter daily, questioning what truly connects us to strangers and what worlds exist behind the silhouettes we pass.
Belin describes the track as a “portrait of the human condition”, emerging without planning as a meditation on identity and recognition. His approach to songwriting remains intuitive, allowing ideas to develop organically rather than forcing predetermined concepts. This method produces the kind of cryptic charm that has become his signature.
The song challenges the cynical notion that “man is a wolf to man”, with Belin’s warm vocals suggesting a more benevolent worldview. He turns the pessimistic phrase on itself, noting that “the man who said that man was a wolf to man is a man who is therefore a wolf to man”, creating a philosophical loop that undermines the original sentiment.
His recent literary work “La Figure” reimagines autobiography through an invented double who revisits childhood trauma, demonstrating how Belin uses fiction to explore personal truth. This approach mirrors his songwriting, where direct confession gives way to more oblique revelations. The contrast between his rich literary language and his precisely carved songs creates interesting tension across his creative output.
“L’inconnu en personne” serves as the first single from his eighth album, scheduled for autumn 2025, with live dates planned for 2026 including three nights at La Cigale in Paris.
